Artist’s Statement

Since I was a kid I’ve loved movies—sitting on the floor in front of a TV was, and still is, my favorite pastime. When I was 12 my dad brought home a camcorder to memorialize our family vacations—within a week I commandeered it and began making my own movies. My first was for an 8th-grade social studies class, but instead of the fact-driven film my teacher requested, I wrote a murder scene with historical references peppered in. I bribed my friends to act in it and bought pig intestines from the local butcher for special effects. The final product was unbelievably rough and shockingly violent, but all mine. After it premiered the teacher called my parents with serious concerns (in hindsight the intestines were probably too much), but that project sealed the deal. I was in love with filmmaking.

Over the years my skills and knowledge have evolved, but the subject matter remains the same—dark. Horror and thrillers are the genres I gravitate towards because I enjoy creating worlds in which the audience can explore their own dark sides as intimately as I have mine.

Dark sides are important. They should be nurtured like nasty black orchids.
